Summer cooking camp for kids!

This summer I added a new camp to my business. I decided that if I wanted kids to make better food choices by learning to cook then perhaps I should be the one to teach them. For 4 days in early July I put together a cooking camp that covered kitchen safety and the basics of being in the kitchen. I was fortunate to have children that had some cooking experience. They were all very excited and enthusiastic to be there with me.
The first day was spend talking about muffins and what ingredients are used and how to use them. We created yummy blueberry muffins that had very little sugar in them which really let the blueberry flavor shine through. I chose a muffin recipe because they are so forgiving to extra ingredients. As they had never measured before I had each station set up with everything they would need to create this recipe. They were very eager to use the things in front of them and did a great job listening and watching my demonstrations before they were to begin. The muffins not only smelled great but looked great too. Each child had a number of muffins to take home and they were thrilled to show their parents what they made.
Each day was a healthy food choice that allowed the children to use new kitchen techniques. In between those times when things were cooking I had numerous cooking related activities to keep them busy and engaged with what we were doing in the kitchen.
This has given me a chance to see how thrilled kids are to help out and how much I have to offer as a teacher and instructor.
I'm creating a curriculum for the fall and hope to teach through the school year.
I'm ready to get going and have fun with these enthusiastic learners.
More to come......
